- - - - - - | Small rare blown Oval Blown Glass sailors Diorama Item # 2690 Click HERE to inquire about this item Late 19th century diorama in blown glass vessel depicting a French prisoner of war, seated on a stool beside a bench,with a bone model of a ship. A pair of manacles hangs on the wall, a ball and chain is clamped to his foot, and a large rat keeps him company.l Made of bone, wood, metal, cloth,leather , straw and pigment. Note, jeweler and watchmakers in Ghent were conscripted by Napoleon to serve in his war with England. They were captured and imprisoned by the British. They passed the time by carving intricately detailed ship models and dioramas out of bones left from their meals or what ever wood they found. This diorama measures 6 inches high.

including harpoons, hooks, daggers, flensing knives, gaffs, etc. The hull is
crafted of individual ivory "planks". This is a six-man, single mast
whaleboat. It would have been one of four carried on a whaling ship. Its
crew would have included a coxswain, four rowers, and a harpooner up front. The model has been mounted in a fine mahogany and brass case.
Boat measures 10 and one quarter inches long by 2 and three quarters inches wide by 2 and one quarter inches high. Case / Mount: 13 and one half inches
long by 6 and one half inches wide by 5 and three quarter inches high.

This well executed ships model depicts all the details of the original ship down to the rigging, pulleys ropes and life boats. Planked sides with brass cannon ports. This ship model measures 24 inches high by 41 inches wide by 6 inches deep and 8 and one half inches at the life boats. The case measures 28 inches high by 44 and one quarter inches wide by 14 and one half inches deep. The Amerigo Vespucci is certainly one of the most known, and many consider the most beautiful ship, on the seas today. This is the main training ship for the Italian Navy. It was ordered in 1929 and commissioned in 1931 at the Royal Italian Shipyard of Castellamare di Stabia in Naples. This is an accurate rendering of the seventy four gun wooden hull frigate. Fine internal structural details can be seen through the portholes. This model was made in the mid to late 20th century and come to us from a local estate.
